the walk home: a first hand account of the reality of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

For what has been a very long time (all my life), I have struggled with OCD. It’s a curse and affects nearly all aspects of my life (especially relationships) but is what gives me my creative super powers. I have had bouts with different worries and rituals and have come to realise that even though social attitudes towards mental health have come leaps and bounds in the last 50 years, people are still ignorant towards and don’t understand what OCD is. I take pictures when leaving triggering places to make sure I haven’t left on a switch, stove, left a door unlocked or dropped anything. These pictures fill my camera roll by the thousands. When me and my previous partner broke up, I walked 8 minutes home where I took 100 pictures on the way. I thought I would put these images into a publication with text highlighting the thought process with images becoming less ordered and consumed by ‘thoughts’ (in red) as the book progresses to show how the condition is debilitating and spirals out of control.
